The Refugee Program: Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
I want to take action for refugee rights. How do I do this?
Refugee-related actions are posted regularly on the actions page of this section of our web site. If you live in an area where a Refugee Network group operates, you may wish to join RefNet (email refugees@amnesty.ca for more information). An excellent way to support Amnesty International's work on refugee rights is to become a member and/or financial supporter. Call 1-800-AMNESTY if you wish to join or make a donation.
I am a refugee claimant in Canada who needs help with my claim. Can you help me?
Consult our Information for Asylum-Seekers and their Advocates information page to learn what Amnesty International members and staff can do to help refugee claimants and their advocates.
I am a person in need of protection who is outside Canada. Can Amnesty International sponsor me to come to Canada?
Amnesty International does not have a Sponsorship Agreement with the Government of Canada which allows us to assist in the sponsorship of refugees to Canada. For more information about sponsorship by either the Canadian Government or a private group, visit the web site of Citizenship and Immigration Canada at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/refugees/resettle-menu.html
When do I contact Amnesty International for assistance?
Contact Amnesty International as soon as possible after you receive a negative decision from the Immigration and Refugee Board. Do not wait until you've received your Pre-Removal Risk Assessment notice to contact us! The longer we have to research your case, the better we will be able to help you. Generally, four to six weeks is needed to properly investigate and take action on refugee cases.
I am a student or teacher looking for information on refugees for use in the classroom. Where do I find this?
Check out the links page in our refugee section for some great educational online resources on refugees.
