Canada

Amnesty International is greatly troubled by reports of refugee claimants who have come to the Canadian border being directed back to the United States, where they may be detained and not able to pursue their claim for protection in Canada. We are concerned that this current treatment of refugee claimants at the border jeopardizes the fundamental human right to a) seek asylum from persecution, b) be free from discrimination and c) not to be arbitrarily detained. Take Action

Canada

Amnesty International is deeply concerned with respect to growing suggestions that the government may be considering temporarily or indefinitely delaying implementation of those provisions of the new Immigration and Refugee Protection Act which would lead to the establishment of a Refugee Appeal Division. TAKE ACTION

Afghanistan

At the present time over 3.5 million Afghans are outside their country as refugees, and over one million are displaced internally. A small number of Afghans have been accepted as Convention refugees in Canada, and are desperately trying to reunite with their families. We urge the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Canada to expedite the processing of their applications to bring their dependents to Canada, especially those who are women and children. For more information on the refugee situation in Afghanistan, click here. Take Action.

Canada: Freedom from Violence

Fleeing their own country is often the last resort for women trying to escape violence. All refugees are entitled to international protection. Ensuring that Canada provides such protection is a critical link in addressing violence against women. Act Now.
