History - Amnesty activism today
Today, Amnesty International activism is undergoing dramatic change in communities, schools and across electronic networks around the world.
The original Amnesty idea of a group of concerned people "adopting" a prisoner is now one part of a much larger picture.
Today you will also find Amnesty supporters - in schools, communities, workplaces, faith communities and elsewhere - working enthusiastically on a variety of exciting and creative projects:
- Creating quilts in solidarity with human rights defenders in Colombia.
- Setting up in local shops and libraries, and asking the public to sign a postcard appeal to change Canadian refugee policy.
- Painting a huge, colourful petition banner that will be sent to the police in India, urging them to defend the human rights of women
Today, Amnesty supporters work together in many diverse settings - through book clubs and discussion groups, as people with similar interests (such as health care professionals or artists), or supporters who help with fundraising or publicity activities.
Amnesty members work alongside non-members. Long-standing Amnesty supporters take action alongside people who are involved on an occasional basis.
It's an electronic age - and thousands of Amnesty International members and other concerned members of the public now take action online through Amnesty websites, or receive action material by email. Electronic networks of supporters with similar interests also exist across the Amnesty system.
Each of the many individuals who directly support Amnesty International's work through their financial contributions are important activists in their own right. In fact our donors make everything possible - every one of Amnesty International's research missions, reports, campaigns, and human rights education projects.
With Amnesty International, each person has an opportunity to speak out for the human rights of others - and to make their voice heard.
