Our progress so far

We apologize for the long delay since we last updated you. The campaign has been very low-key for quite some time.

During 2007, even though we had decided that we would be running a campaign to buy our own building, instead of sharing one with another organization, the Toronto fundraising staff were consumed by the work required to raise funds for Amnesty International’s mission work. It had been a very challenging year for the national fundraising program, and all efforts were required just to fund our core work.

However, it is now August 2008, and we must move the Toronto office in less than  one year! At the end of June 2009, our temporary lease will be up, and the staff and volunteers have long outgrown this makeshift space for our human rights work.

We are re-launching the campaign for our Action & Resource Centre in Toronto, now also known as Amnesty International’s Human Rights House in Toronto.

Thank you for your support for this vital campaign to create an accessible, visible and permanent home for Amnesty’s Urgent Action Network, Refugee Network, regional membership development, media relations, action teams, volunteer groups and national fundraising programs.

Funds raised to date
We currently have about $240,000 in the bank, with additional pledges of almost $60,000. We are hoping to raise a total of $1 million by the end of this year.

Expert help
Steve Thomas, CFRE, Chairman & Creative Director of Stephen Thomas Ltd., one of Canada’s leading fundraising and marketing agencies, has agreed to lend his expertise to the capital campaign to buy a building in Toronto. Steve ran Amnesty’s national direct marketing program for 25 years, and during that time raised many millions of dollars for our human rights work. We are delighted that he will begin working with us in June.

T-shirts and key chains for special gifts
In order to kick-start the campaign, we are offering very attractive Human Rights House campaign t-shirts to any donor who makes a gift of $100 or more. For a donation of $50, you can receive a campaign key chain, which will remind you that you are helping us build a better home for Amnesty’s human rights work in Toronto.
