Dear %,
Welcome To This Special Edition of Activist!
Last year, as a cost-cutting measure, it was decided not to print the July/August issue of the Activist this year. The reasoning was that some members curb their activism during the summer months.
However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t actions you can take, either as an individual member or as part of a group at summer fairs, picnics, farmer’s markets and a range of other venues.
Here - courtesty of this special online version of Activist magazine - are some activities you take part in. Read on!
Highlights of Amnesty’s 2008 AGM
About 300 members came to Amnesty Canada’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Toronto in June, to debate resolutions, meet legendary Uighur leader Rebiya Kadeer, take part in a colourful march, share ideas and inspire each other. Click here to learn more about this important, once-a-year event.
Still Time To Press China To Keep The Promise
Our 100 Days of Action to press China to keep the promises on human rights it made when first awarded the 2008 Olympics, continues until August 8th.
If you haven’t yet taken part in the many actions to help make human rights the legacy of the Olympics, now is the time to act. Read an Open Letter to Hu Jintao from Irene Khan, take action on Internet censorship, test your knowledge with our China Quiz or tell us about your Olympic dream. Click here.
October 17th – Mark this Date!
October 17th is the International Day To Eliminate Poverty. This year, as part of our new global Dignity Campaign, Amnesty will be part of the coalition of international agencies working to Make Poverty History.
Plan now to become involved in this important event, either as an individual activist or as part of a group of friends. The September/October print issue of Activist will introduce you to the Dignity Campaign and feature actions you can take. Look for it in the mail at the end of August.
