The focus on Father Solalinde raised his profile sufficiently that it enabled him to participate in high-level meetings with Mexican senators to discuss the issue of irregular migrants. He has also been invited to attend the UN Migrant Workers Committee meeting in Geneva in April.
Amnesty’s spotlight on him also contributed to Father Solalinde receiving protection from two state-appointed bodyguards to combat the harassment and threats he has received from xenophobic members of local communities for carrying out his work.
The letters of solidarity had a great impact on the staff at the migrants shelter run by Father Solalinde. As they too are harassed and threatened for the work they carry out, they greatly appreciated the demonstration of solidarity. The staff are producing a banner made up of the letters they have received. They will hang it in the shelter, so that the migrants who use their services can see that they are not alone, and that people from all over the world support the work of the shelter.
