16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence: 16 Shelters for 16 Days

Building and supporting a women’s shelter is a key piece in stopping the violence against women and ending the silence.
When a woman or girl enters a shelter, alone or with her children, she will find safety and support to end the violence in her life. She will begin to create a life where her rights are respected.
Shelters are only part of the solution, but they are critical in situations where women’s lives are at risk.
You can contribute to the efforts of hundreds of women’s human rights defenders who work in their homes, on the street, in shelters, crisis centres, interval houses, advocacy organizations and even in government offices. By taking action to demand support for five shelters in Canada, Pakistan, Venezuala, Georgia and Turkey, you stand with women’s human rights defenders to make leaving violent situations possible for women and girls.
Amnesty's international initiative “16 Shelters for 16 Days” starts on 25 November, which is the International Day Against Violence Against Women, and continues until International Human Rights Day on 10 December.
Women’s rights activists around the world will step up their campaign to end gender-based violence during this international campaigning period.
16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence was initiated by the global women’s movement and continues to be facilitated by the Centre for Women’s Global Leadership.
