Tell us about your "Close Guantanamo" Event
Event: Trent University's Chapter of Amnesty International will be holding a day long protest to call for the closure of Guantanamo Bay on January 24th, 2007. The protest will take place on the campus of Trent University in Peterborough, and will visit all colleges of the university, as well as the Peterborough Town Hall.
Starting at 8am, and running until 9pm, a handful of student activists will be making appearances across campus dressed in the orange suits and black hoods that the Guantanamo detainees are forced to wear. The intent is to make a visual impact on the students of Trent University, and put the image of Guantanamo in their minds. The following Wednesday, January 31st, Trent's AI will be holding a letter writing campaign calling for the closure of the detention center. We are hoping that the images of our protest will drive students to sign our petition.

It is important that human rights are defended all around the world, no matter where violations are committed, by who, and for what reason. Every human being has the right to dignity, the right to not be tortured, the right to a trial. These rights have not been realized at Guantanamo Bay, so we must ensure that the American military respects them.

Event: Toronto Rally to CLOSE GUANTANAMO
With signs, banners and an 8 x 8 "prison" full of orange-suited, so-called "enemy combatants", we will demonstrate to passersby, the US government and the Toronto media that this ongoing attack on the principles of human rights must end immediately. We demand that the Guantánamo detainees be charged, tried and, if evidence is lacking as it surely is, released.

Guantánamo Bay, the US Detention Centre, is an abomination. According to Amnesty International, this prison is “an open attack on human rights” where 400 men are currently being humiliated, tortured and detained without charge or trial.

Event: The event will be a street theatre-esque demonstration where at least 5 participants will be clothed in orange prison jumpsuits to represent the prisoners at
Guantanamo. They will be handled by "guards" dressed in military fatigues, and all of the prisoners, as well as other participants will have signs with slogans regarding human rights. We will start the day by hosting tables at both Concordia and McGill to
get signatures for post cards, and later congregate at Philips Square to begin the main event. From there, we will head to the consulate, where we intend to have media coverage.
Join us in a march to stop human rights abuses in the name of the "war on terror".

A "war on terror" is not an excuse for denying suspects their human rights. The question of security will not be addressed by breaking international law and making up rules for the detainment of terror suspects. Prisoners are humans too, and have rights to fair trials and just treatment.

Why close Guantanamo? Because it openly breaks international law. Guantanamo tells the world it's okay to torture, deny fair trials, and abuse human rights. Guantanamo is a symbol of contempt for human dignity, safety and freedom. Guantanamo makes the world less secure by fueling more anger and violence.
United Nations experts, the UN Committee Against Torture, former US presidents, and other allies have all called for the closure of Guantánamo.

The US detention centre at Guantánamo Bay has become a symbol of injustice and abuse.
Hundreds of people called "enemy combatants" have been illegally detained for five years, many without access to any court, legal counsel or family visits.
Many interviewed by Amnesty allege that they were tortured at Guantánamo. Three of the 400 who remain have committed suicide, and others have gone on prolonged hunger strikes.

Amnesty International members believe in human rights. We're asking our government and others to protect those rights in all circumstances and to speak out when injustice happens. Human rights violations are never acceptable. As the slogan says so well, "Human Rights for All. No Exceptions."
