Stolen Sisters - Help break the silence

Janna Pratt joins marchers on 22 July 2005 in Saskatoon to draw attention to the plight of missing Indigenous women. Troy Fleece, The Canadian Press

According to Canadian government statistics, young Indigenous women in Canada are at least five times more likely than all other women to die as a result of violence.

Although there have been some welcome initiatives undertaken by both levels of government, significant gaps remain in the protection of Indigenous women's human rights.

Please support our continuing efforts to urge the federal government to establish a comprehensive and coordinated plan of action to stop violence against Indigenous women.

TAKE ACTION:

Send an email message to your member of parliament, encouraging him or her to take action to stop the threat of violence faced by indigenous women in Canada.

Subject:

include the following prepared text in your response (uncheck this box if you wish to write your own text)

According to government statistics, young Indigenous women are at least five times more likely than all other women to die as the result of violence. This violence takes place in the home, in Indigenous communities, and in the streets of cities across Canada . Not enough is being done to stop it.

The four political parties represented in the House of Commons have all condemned the violence. Now it’s time for action.

I urge you to do everything in your power to urge the government work with Indigenous women's organizations to establish a comprehensive plan of action to stop violence against Indigenous women. This plan of action must:

  • Uphold the rights of all Indigenous women whether they live on reserve or in other communities
  • Ensure effective coordination of federal and provincial policies, programs and services.
  • Address long-standing and deep-rooted patterns of discrimination and impoverishment that put so many Indigenous women in harm’s way.
  • Ensure that police in every jurisdiction have clear guidance on effective and appropriate response to threats to Indigenous women's lives and safety, including reports of women and girls who have gone missing.
  • Help Indigenous women escape from abusive relationships and dangerous situations by ensuring adequate, sustained funding to shelters and frontline organizations providing culturally appropriate services.
