Malaysia end the targeting of members of the transgender community

Human rights defender and lawyer Siti Kasim has been charged with “obstruction” in connection with a raid on a transgender event held in April 2016. She could face up to two years in prison or a maximum fine of RM10, 000 (USD 2,331) or both, if convicted.

On 3 April 2016, the Federal Territories Islamic Department (JAWI) carried out a raid on a private transgender beauty pageant. While pageants are generally prohibited for Muslim women under religious laws, the state officials specifically targeted members of the transgender community.

    Lolita Chavez Guatemala Indigenous defenders

Maya-K’iche human rights defender Lolita Chavez is known to Canadians for her determined and principled stance on the right of Indigenous peoples to determine what happens in their territories. Lolita has spoken to Canadian leaders, investors and the public about the ways in which the Guatemalan government has failed to protect Indigenous peoples and how this leaves them exposed to abuses by corporate actors, such as mining, hydro-electric or logging interests. Most people in the region rely on subsistence farming for their livelihoods and are concerned that these industrial activities would destroy sources of water needed for irrigation and drinking. Lolita organized a community referendum on resource development in Santa Cruz del Quiche, Quiche department and residents overwhelmingly voted ‘NO’ to any form of industrial development on their lands.

Community leaders, lawyers, journalists and other human rights defenders across the world are facing unprecedented levels of persecution, intimidation and violence, warned Amnesty International today as it launched a new global campaign demanding an end to the onslaught of attacks against brave individuals standing up to injustice.

“What we are witnessing today is a full-frontal assault by governments, armed groups, corporations and others with power on the very right to defend human rights. Human rights defenders bear the brunt of this global attack,” said Salil Shetty, the Secretary General of Amnesty International.

    Luis Fernando García Monroy

Luis Fernando was shot and seriously injured in 2013 by security guards employed by Tahoe Resources, a Canadian company, at its mine in Santa Rosa, Guatemala. He went on to co-found JODVID (Jovenes en Defensa de la Vida - Youth in Defence of Life), an organization that uses the arts to communicate the importance of protecting the environment from the harms of large-scale industrial activities, including mining.

Felipe is a Lenca agro ecologist in Honduras, member of the Lenca Indigenous Council of Gualinga and the coordinator of the Independent Indigenous Lenca Movement of La Paz (MILPAH). Join us for a webinar introducing Amnesty's latest global campaign, We Defend.

Human rights defenders are people who stand up for justice in sometimes extraordinary circumstances. But they are under attack. Around the world, these brave people who take a stand are being undermined by smear campaigns, government surveillance, unjust imprisonment and forced disappearance. Thousands have been killed. We all want to live in a world where justice is possible and human rights are protected. But that is only possible if human rights defenders are protected. We must defend the defenders.

This webinar will introduce you to our new global campaign and give you resources and information to help you get started.
