Hu Jia: Prominent Chinese writer silenced by prison sentence
Posted on: 15/04/08

Shi TaoOne of China’s most respected journalists, Hu Jia, has just been sentenced to 3 1/2 years of imprisonment. The charge made against him? “Subverting state authority”.

Hu Jia’s arrest is part of a clear pattern by China to silence criticism prior to the Olympic Games. His arrest is of great concern to Amnesty International – not only because Hu Jia has been a reliable source of information about human rights conditions in China, but also because it’s a disturbing indication of China’s commitment to free expression.

Please send a message by email now to China’s Minister of Justice to expresses your deep concern that Hu Jia has been imprisoned solely for engaging in peaceful and legitimate human rights activities, and calling on his immediate and unconditional release.

Please sign Amnesty's e-petition calling for the immediate release of jailed writer Hu Jia

WU Aiying Buzhang
Minister of Justice
People's Republic of China

Dear Minister,

I am writing to express my deep concern that writer Hu Jia has been imprisoned solely for engaging in peaceful and legitimate human rights activities and in violation of his fundamental right to freedom of expression.

I call on you to release him immediately and unconditionally, as he is a prisoner of conscience. I also urge you to stop the police surveillance and harassment of Zeng Jinyan and allow her to contact the outside world in line with her fundamental rights to freedom of movement, expression and association.

I also wish to express my belief that detaining, trying and sentencing human rights activists for their peaceful activities runs counter to promises made by numerous Chinese officials that human rights protections or situation would improve in the run-up to the Beijing Olympics of August 2008.
