BED-INS

What is a Bed-in?

Bed-ins are inspired by John Lennon & Yoko Ono, who in 1969 held a press conference from their room of the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal to rally the world around peace. It was at this famous bed-in that “Give Peace a Chance” was recorded. “Get in Bed for Darfur” draws on the energy, hope and call to action of the original bed-in, and urges us to help bring peace in 2007 to the people of Darfur.

Why should I have a bed-in?

Because it’s a chance to get together with your friends and do something to help Darfur. Our political leaders need to hear us and see us speaking out in the millions against global inaction on Darfur. In Canada, Amnesty will deliver your bed-in photos and the growing list of names on the global petition to the Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

How do I hold my own bed-in?

Invite your friends over for a photo-shoot to draw attention to the need for peace in Darfur. What you do and how you do it is up to you. Play the Instant Karma CD … serve up a meal … have your friends sign the global petition. Then capture the karma of the moment in a creative photo to submit to Amnesty’s Instant Karma Bed-in Photo Contest.

INSTANT KARMA

What is Instant Karma?

Instant Karma is a worldwide campaign to help bring peace to the people of the Darfur region of Sudan. The project is a result of a creative collaboration of John Lennon music recorded onto a 2-CD set by today’s top artists. Yoko Ono made an incredibly generous offer of John Lennon’s entire solo collection to help raise money and awareness for Amnesty’s work in Darfur.

“Instant Karma” is the name of an original John Lennon tune from 1970 – recorded on the new CD by U2. Get the Instant Karma CD.

“Instant Karma's gonna get you

Gonna knock you right in the head

You better get yourself together

Pretty soon your gonna be dead

What in the world you thinking of?

Laughing in the face of love

What on Earth you try'na do?

It's up to you

Yeah, you ...”

Who are the musicians involved in Instant Karma?

DARFUR

What is Amnesty doing about Darfur?

Amnesty has been drawing attention to the situation in Darfur since the disturbing initial reports five years ago of mass killings in the western portion of Sudan. Last October, Amnesty sent a research mission to Chad to investigate reports of the spreading of the conflict from Darfur to neighbouring Chad. Amnesty has been meeting with United Nations officials and putting pressure on governments around the world to bring effective peacekeepers to the region. It’s clear that we need the voices of millions of people to mobilize decision-makers to take effective action.

What can I do to help bring peace to Darfur?

Please sign your name to the global petition and demand action from world leaders to stop the killing in Darfur. You can also:

  • Write a letter to your Member of Parliament.
  • Tell your friends and help build the movement for peace in Darfur.
  • Buy Instant Karma or download the recordings on iTunes to raise money and awareness for Amnesty’s work in Darfur.
  • Raise money for Darfur by hosting a bed-in or Taste for Justice dinner.
  • Send a donation to support Amnesty’s work

Does pressure from Amnesty work?

Vocal public pressure has stopped human rights catastrophes before, sometimes against impossible odds – East Timor, apartheid in South Africa and human rights abuses in Eastern Europe are three examples. Amnesty letter-writing on behalf of individuals suffering human rights abuse can often lead to uplifting, life-saving results. Now is the time to demand safety and peace for the people of Darfur. The Darfur conflict will only end if United Nations members intervene with an effective peacekeeping force – and this can only happen if enough of us, millions of us, demand action.
