Global Civil Society Letter to Governments on the Development and Implementation of National Action Plans on Business and Human Rights

    On May 1, 2014, the Canadian Network on Corporate Accountability (CNCA) (of which Amnesty International Canada is a member), the International Corporate Accountability Roundtable (ICAR), the European Coalition for Corporate Justice (ECCJ) and the Corporate Responsibility Coalition (CORE) released a letter calling on all governments to develop, implement, and continuously review National Action Plans (NAPs) on business and Human Rights.

    The letter lays out a set of minimum criteria for NAPs on business and human rights, urging governments to develop and implement NAPs that:

    •     Are evidence-based and developed from a mapping and gap analysis;
    •     Are developed through meaningful consultation with all stakeholders;
    •     Ensure policy coherence;
    •     Include commitments by the State to establish and enforce regulations to protect against human rights abuses;
    •     Guarantee access to effective judicial remedy; and
    •     Identify and engage in monitoring and reporting mechanisms for periodic assessment.

    Read open letter.
