Amnesty youth member with a candle

Keep the Candle Bright

You defend human rights. For me, this is the greatest duty of every person
Dobroslav Paraga,
released "prisoner of conscience" in the former Yugoslavia

A bequest to Amnesty International in your will is one of the most popular ways of leaving a human rights legacy for a better future.

Having an up-to-date will is very important. Unfortunately, a high percentage of Canadians die without making a will (intestate). Processing an estate without a will can be costly and time-consuming, and it cannot take into account your personal wishes and priorities.

A well-constructed will can also maximize the value of your estate. For example, a charitable bequest can reduce the final tax burden of your estate by as much as 100% of your income in the year of demise and the previous year.

We recommend that you seek professional advice when drawing up or revising a will.

Your financial planner can advise you on how to obtain optimal tax benefits for your estate from various types of charitable gifts. Your lawyer can draft or amend your will to include a bequest to Amnesty International if you choose.
