Women of courage: Director of a Malaysian group called "Tenaganita" (Women's Force), Irene Fernandez was charged in 1996 under the Printing Presses and Publications Act with publishing a memorandum entitled 'Abuse, Torture and Dehumanised Treatment of Migrant Workers in Detention Camps'. She was sentenced on October 16th, 2003 to 12 months imprisonment and remains free on bail, pending the outcome of her appeal.
