Hu Jia and Zeng Jinyan, human rights activists silenced in China
“China said it would protect human rights, but this verdict goes completely against that.” Zeng Jinyan
Hu Jia is one of China's best-known environmental, HIV/AIDS and human rights activists. His wife, Zeng Jinyan, is a respected HIV/AIDS activist and human rights blogger.
Following an unfair trial in April 2008, Hu Jia was imprisoned for three and a half years for “inciting subversion of state power.” He has been denied the medication he needs to combat hepatitis B, and has been threatened by the authorities for speaking up prison.
Zeng Jinyan and the couple's two-year-old daughter are under house arrest.
Amnesty International calls for Hu Jia's immediate freedom and an end to the harassment of Zeng Jinyan and their daughter.
