 A Message from Eve Goldberg

Eve goldbergWhen I saw the monks being beaten and taken away by force in Burma*, I felt outrage – and I felt powerless. What could an ordinary person like me do from halfway around the world?

I couldn’t stop the military in Burma, but one of the things I felt I could do was bear witness to the events there, and remind people here in North America that the people of Burma are counting on us. That’s how my song “The Streets of Burma” was born.

I turned to Amnesty International because it has thousands of members around the world who are speaking up for justice and freedom in Burma. And I know they can help free prisoners and stop torture.

I really believe that we must raise our voices one by one – and Amnesty International is one of the best ways I know to make my voice count.

Please send the e-postcard below to free the imprisoned monk U Gambira.

And please make your voice count in the days to come by taking action through its e-bulletin “Speak Out” or by joining Amnesty International.

TAKE ACTION:

Sign Amnesty's e-postcard

Please send this e-postcard to the Myanmar ambassador to Canada expressing your demand that U Gambira be released.

Dear U Maung Maung,

Buddhist monk U Gambira was arrested November 4, 2007 for the peaceful expression of his beliefs. I understand he has been tortured and, on a total of 16 charges, has been sentenced to 68 years imprisonment.

U Gambira is one of many monks and their supporters who have been given long prison sentences following grossly unfair trials as a result of peaceful demonstrations in September 2007.

I urge your government to:

  • Immediately and unconditionally free U Gambira.
  • Ensure he is not subjected to torture.
  • Ensure U Gambira has access to independent lawyers and medical treatment while in prison.
