A Serbian human rights activist will not now face imprisonment, following action by Amnesty International and a coalition of Serbian non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
Maja Stojanović was convicted by a Serbian court for displaying posters in an unauthorized place. The posters had urged the Serbian authorities to arrest and transfer alleged war criminal Ratko Mladić to the International Criminal Tribunal in The Hague.
After Amnesty International and others called on the authorities not imprison Maja Stojanović, the President of Serbia expressed his support for her.
For several years, Amnesty has been urging the Serbian authorities to arrest and transfer Ratko Mladić to The Hague and to support Serbian NGOs working on war-crimes.
