Send your positive energy to the communities in Cabañas
Water is the essence of Life.
But in Cabañas, El Salvador, some people are worried their water supplies will be contaminated by waste from gold mining operations.
A proposed gold mine in the province of Cabañas raised fears that toxic wastes from gold mining would contaminate the region’s water supply. Local environmental and community groups believe their environment must be protected from the negative effects of resource development and that they have the right to participate in decisions about development in their communities.
In 2008, the Salvadoran government denied the mining company environmental permits to begin mineral exploitation. The company responded by launching a lawsuit against El Salvador under the Central America Free Trade Agreement, which is still pending.
| However, in 2009, three people active with environmental and community anti-mining organisations were brutally killed. The killings were apparantly motivated by the environmental beliefs and campaigning work of the three activists. Other people, such as local community journalists reporting on the situation, have been subject to death threats and intimidation. |
Amnesty International is calling on the Salvadoran authorities to do the following:
- to conduct a full, impartial investigation of the killings and threats
- bring those responsible to justice
- provide adequate protection for those who have received threats.
Amnesty International is also calling on all Canadians to show their support for residents of the province of Cabañas, El Salvador who are standing up in the face of intimidation and fear to protect the environment and their democratic rights.
Please help Amnesty International spread a message of hope and solidarity!
