A man is beaten by plain clothes policemen as fellow supporters come to his aid during riots in Tehran

Two Iranian doctors and 24 others are missing - their whereabouts unknown - after they were arrested at a peaceful protest following last Friday's widely-disputed election. These detentions are part of an alarming and violent response by Iranian police to the popular demonstrations that have gripped Iran for the past week.

15 people have reportedly been killed, and hundreds more injured or arrested by security forces - including writers, political activists, students, and doctors. Phone and internet services have been cut off and people have been warned to stay home.

But they’re not staying home. People are taking to the streets in the largest public gatherings in the history of modern Iran to demand change.

Your help is needed at this critical moment for human rights in Iran.

Today, Amnesty International has issued an Urgent Action to its worldwide membership, urging all our supporters to respond on behalf of missing and detained activists in Iran.

Please join our letter-writers in taking action:

    • Sign Amnesty’s Urgent Action appeal calling on the Iranian authorities to immediately release all political prisoners and imprisoned activists.
    • Make a donation to help Amnesty mobilize its global Urgent Action Network of dedicated letter-writers, and campaign for human rights change in Iran.

The Iranian authorities need to know that the world is watching.

Amnesty’s Urgent Action Network is vital in moments like this.

Through it, we are able to mobilize thousands of members around the world to deliver a clear message to the Iranian government that they must respect the basic human rights of their citizens.

The Urgent Action Network is our most effective tool to make sure that this opportunity for human rights change is not met with violence, reprisal, and repression.

Together we can end 30 years of state-sanctioned human rights violations:  public stonings, systematic repression of women's rights, suppression of dissent, and the arbitrary arrest and torture of political opponents and those who speak out for change.

    Sincerely,

    Marilyn McKim
    Urgent Action Network Coordinator,
    Amnesty International Canadian Section

P.S. It costs just over $100,000 per year to run the Urgent Action Network. This incredible network saves lives, and in crises like this one, ensures that leaders know the world cares profoundly about the fate of imprisoned activists. Please stand behind this work and make a donation to Amnesty International now.

P.P.S. The detained writers, physicians and activists in Iran are seeking what we all want and expect: freedom of expression, freedom of religion, freedom of the press.  Please help make this change happen.
