I worked in Porgera,...this action will call for pay back and retaliation and so will violate employees safety of travelling to and from the mine Site to the Airport. The Miners Safety is now compromised, not to mention the people who lost there homes and livelihood.... This is so sick!!!

I never thought the day would come when being a Canadian would be something to be ashamed of. This is really sad.

This is shameful to all Canadians. Human rights abused in other countries are a threat to the rghts we take for granted.

If we cannot honour our commitment to human rights abroad, what good are they, even at home? Could Barrick do this to people in Windsor or Sept-Iles? Then why is it ok somewhere else?

It is shameful for Canadian companies to do things in foreign countries that they would not do at home. This has to stop!

This is a shameful reflection on Canada. I expect the government to intervene with Canadian-based companies to ensure they respect basic human rights.

What possible advantage could there be to damaging Canada's reputation as a compassionate, responsible country by hiring foreign jackals to brutalize the Papua New Guinea poor into compliance with Barrick's industrial greed? This is corporate irresponsibility of the worst kind; it defines the need for Canadian corporate accountability to be legislated and enforced.

I spent a couple of years in Papua New Guinea in the 1990's. I'm aware of the often ppor record of mining companies. Unfortuately some of these companies are Canadian. I also know it is often easy to subvert the authorities through bribes and promises of perferment. The Canadian Government should ensure that these companies adhere to international standards and should vigourously urge the government of PNG to respect the human right of its people. Unfortunately Canada is developing a reputation for doing just the opposite.

You have turned the land and lives of those in PNG upside down. The Dutch Disease prevents any of your so-called development to be sustainable, and you of course know that the quality of life in Porgera has not increased. It breaks my heart to hear testimony from the women of Porgera especially when they describe how their lives have changed since the min... how the biodiversity has decreased, the poverty has increased, how some women now live in the bush and become prostitutes, while the men get more drunk and lazy. This is a text-book example of why mining can be the antithesis of development. Also, the Amnesty call-out doesn't mention it, but PNG newspapers reported that the State of Emergency that made way for the house burnings was called for following situation reports prepared by Barrick Gold. Barrick is implicated in this human rights abuse squarely. Who will investigate that?

Please ensure the rights of villagers and landowners are respected and that the agreements made to relocate people are made in a timely, lawful and respectful manner.

As a Canadian I am embarrassed to share that name with people who would commit such a selfish and appalling act. I would hope that Barrick Gold and the governments of Papua New Guinea and Canada would put this situation right.
