Take action to help protect civilians caught up on the conflict in Democratic Republic of Congo.

"Every day of delay is costing lives"

Watch this two minute video by Amnesty researcher Andrew Philip describing the plight of civilians who face terrible violence as the crisis in DRC escalates, and the urgent need for the UN Security Council to strengthen the peacekeeping forces on the ground.

On Nov 20th, the UN Security Council approved the sending of an additional 3,000 peacekeepers to DRC - a woefully inadequate number to have any significant impact on stopping the violence. We need to put more pressure on world leaders to deliver on their commitment to end the crisis in DRC.

Please send a message to Prime Minister Stephen Harper urging him to work urgently with the international community to ensure that the civilians at risk in DRC are protected.

CC: The Honourable Lawrence Cannon
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Canada

Dear Prime Minister,

I am very concerned about the grave threat to civilians caught up in the present conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo. I am calling on the government of Canada to work urgently with the international community to:

  • Call on all parties to the conflict to prevent further civilian casualties and ensure that humanitarian aid agencies are able to carry out their work without interference.

  • Ensure that the United Nations Security Council urgently reinforces MONUC peacekeeping contingents in North-Kivu province, providing the special equipment and personnel needed to effectively protect civilians and safeguard humanitarian operations.

  • Put justice at the centre of a durable peace in the Great Lakes Region of Africa. Deliberate or indiscriminate attacks against civilians and peacekeepers carrying out their duty of protecting civilians is a war crime and punishable under international law.

Human rights violations in the DRC

•  Deliberately targeting civilians in a situation of armed conflict is a war crime

•  Continuing violence against women and children is one of the major barriers to establishing peace and stability in eastern DRC

•  Most of those fleeing the conflict are in a desparate situation, without sufficient food, water, medical supplies or shelter.
