My name is Marguerite Barankitse and I am from Burundi. Some people call me the “Angel of Burundi” but I prefer “Maggie.”

I created four villages where we help 10,000 children affected by Burundi’s civil war and other conflicts in the region. The children receive schooling and learn life-skills, all in a family setting.

People are astonished at what we have created in the middle of massacres and poverty – and even threats against our lives. But I am simply determined to make a difference.
