"Let me express my deep gratitude for your wonderful sense of solidarity.
I count the number of times you have saved my life and made our work
possible. "
My name is Wangari Maathai and I live in Kenya. I started the Green Belt
Movement and recently received the Nobel Peace Prize.
The Green Belt Movement empowers women through self-help projects. One
of our main activities is to plant millions of trees so that we can stop
the de-forestation that leads to the impoverishment of women in rural areas.
Because of our work, we have been attacked by the police and even jailed – but
Amnesty International members and other supporters have always stood
with us.
When you helped restore my freedom from prison in 2001, you also freed
and empowered the other women. Thank-you all for being there for me and
for them.
