“Now, everybody is talking about domestic violence. And many are doing something about it.”

When Marina Pisklakova launched ANNA in 1993 – Russia’s first battered women’s crisis centre and domestic violence hotline – she really did start something new and wonderful.

Today, ANNA has 170 centres, it trains lawyers on how to handle abuse cases, and it calls for laws to protect women.

And, as Ms. Pisklakova says, many people are now speaking out against domestic violence.

“I am not an extraordinary person,” she says. “Any woman in my position would do the same.”

Rosa N – Speak out against the murder of women in El Salvador

People who rape and murder women in El Salvador are rarely brought to justice. This situation puts all women in danger. Make your voice heard. Sign and send the electronic message below – and encourage others to do so as well.

During a recent 18-month period, at least 20 women in El Salvador were murdered and their bodies mutilated. Some were raped prior to being killed. In most cases, no one has been brought to justice for these crimes.

Among these women is the young Rosa N. In December 2002, Rosa N was likely raped – then she was murdered and her body terribly mutilated.

In January 2003 a group of mara (gang) members were arrested on suspicion of involvement in Rosa N’s murder. The case collapsed, however, when the suspects were acquitted on the grounds that they had been imprisoned at the time of Rosa N’s killing. No further investigation took place, and the original evidence appears to have been lost or destroyed. There has been no further investigation into the case.

Amnesty International and local non-governmental human rights organizations in El Salvador are concerned that cases of violence against women, like Rosa N’s, are rarely investigated and that those who are responsible are seldom brought to justice.

Stop violence against women

To: The Attorney General of El Salvador

As the person responsible for law and justice in El Salvador, I urge you to condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the rape and murder of women in your country.

I understand that in a recent 18-month period, at least 20 women were murdered in El Salvador – many of them raped and their bodies mutilated. In most of these cases, there has not been a proper investigation and no one has been brought to justice.

The case of Rosa N is typical: she was raped and murdered in December 2002, and still there has been no proper investigation and no one held accountable for this crime.

I appeal to you to thoroughly investigate the murder of Rosa N. and all unsolved murders of women.

I also ask that you create and publicize an action plan to address the brutal killings of women in El Salvador.

Yours sincerely,
