Every minute of every day

Every minute of every day, women and girls around the world are assaulted, threatened, raped, mutilated and killed. Their fundamental human rights to dignity, freedom, safety, justice and equality are under attack.

Violence against women is taking place everywhere right now – among our friends, on our streets, and in homes, schools and workplaces in Canada and abroad.

Violence against women is also taking place in court rooms, prisons, legislatures and war zones – all places where women are denied the protection that is their right.

What is 10,000 voices?

Many people want to live in a world free from violence against women. But to make this happen, we need to increase – to greatly increase! – public pressure for change. We need many more people to speak out and take action. “10,000 Voices” – part of Amnesty International’s global campaign to Stop Violence Against Women – is our way of helping to build this pressure for change.

What we want

Across Canada and around the world, many groups and individuals are helping to create a world free from violence against women. During 2005-6, Amnesty International Canada members are working for change on four key issues.

We are:

  1. Challenging violence and discrimination against Indigenous women in Canada and other countries.
  2. Ensuring the safety and freedom of women human rights activists.
  3. Stopping violence against women in armed conflict zones.
  4. Ending violence against women in the context of migration.

Make change happen – make your voice heard

Violence against women is wrong and unacceptable – and we can make it stop.

Here are some ways you can help:

  1. Sign-on to the “10,000 Voices ” campaign
  2. Make a commitment by creating your own personal plan of action.
  3. Speak out by adding your voice to the campaign to stop violence against women
  4. Take action to support women human rights defenders around the world
  5. Stay tuned for new features such as posting your picture and a voice message online, or neat things like buttons and t-shirts.
