Looking for other ways to get involved? Join us next week for an educational and thought-provoking evening entitled Climate Change – What it is and How it Affects us All. Register here.

And please take a moment to sign Amnesty’s new e-petition to Canada’s Minister for Environment and Climate Change demanding strong climate action that respects human rights. Sign petition.

Here are some other interesting climate updates:

  • On Sept 23, Amnesty Canada intervened in Canada’s Supreme Court in the carbon pricing challenge between the federal government and the provinces of Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta. We argued that Canada has an obligation under international human rights law to protect human rights, including from climate change, and this must guide Canada’s climate action; and therefore constitutional ambiguities should be resolved in a way that maximizes Canadian compliance with its international human rights obligations. More information.
  • In the Sept 23 speech from the throne, we heard that the Canadian government is committed to exceeding its 2030 climate targets and legislating net zero emissions by 2050. Unfortunately these commitments do not go far enough. See Amnesty’s response to the throne speech.
  • Energy Ministers from G-20 countries (including Canada) are meeting Sept 27-28. Here are Amnesty’s recommendations to the G-20, to address the climate emergency by ensuring a just recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • Last week Amnesty Canada staff met with Minister Wilkinson’s office to urge the adoption of a strong national plan and 2030 targets, as per the requirements of the Paris climate agreement. On Sept 21 we sent this letter to Minister Wilkinson.
