Lifesaver for ages 9 and up -- Argentina: Free an innocent taxi driver

    Wednesday, July 17, 2019 - 14:25

Jorge González Nieva is a 54-year-old taxi driver. He has been in prison for years without a final decision on his case. He sighs, “How can this be? What do I do? What do I do?”  © Amnesty International Argentina / Demian Marchi / 2018

In July 2006, a taxi driver named Jorge was going home after work. Suddenly police arrested him and beat him. They accused him of robbing a bank and of killing someone in the bank.

But Jorge was not involved in those crimes. The police had forced someone at the crime scene to say that Jorge had done it. There is recent evidence from the Innocence Project Foundation to prove that he is innocent.

In 2010, a court sentenced Jorge to 25 years in prison. His lawyer asked the Supreme Court to review it because he thought the sentence was not fair.

Nothing has happened since. Every day that passes without a final decision is another day Jorge remains unfairly in prison. He is now 54.
It’s no wonder Amnesty International calls him The Forgotten Prisoner. It must be so hard to live each day when you don’t know what day your freedom will come. Imagine, too, what it’s like for his three daughters who have waited 12 years, so far, for him to come home.

Aside from jailing someone who is innocent, Amnesty International is concerned that Jorge did not have a fair trial and that he was kept in prison before his trial for longer than the law allows.

Jorge should not stay behind bars any longer. Let’s work together to ask for Jorge’s freedom. Your letter could be a lifesaver.

    WHAT CAN I DO?

Please write to the Supreme Court where Jorge’s case has stalled.

    • Start your letter Dear Supreme Court President.
    • In your first sentence, tell him something about yourself to make your message different from others he will receive.
    • Explain your concern about how long Jorge González Nieva has been in prison without a final decision and ask the Supreme Court president to act quickly to bring his case to a close.
    • Or you could just write “HURRY UP AND MAKE SURE JORGE GONZÁLEZ NIEVA RECEIVES A DECISION ON HIS CASE WITHOUT MORE DELAY.”

    WHAT ELSE CAN I DO?

Jorge will welcome a cheerful message from you. Send him a drawing, a postcard from your town, a photo of yourself or a card to say “I’m thinking of you today.” Mail your message to:
