Colombia: conviction of former intelligence agency director is a significant step towards justice

    September 14, 2011

The conviction of Jorge Noguera for crimes including murder and links with paramilitary groups is a significant step towards justice in Colombia, Amnesty International today said.

Noguera, head of the Administrative Department of Security (Departamento Administrativo de Seguridad  - DAS) under the government of former President Álvaro Uribe, was today sentenced to 25 years in prison for the murder of the academic, Alfredo Correa de Andreis, along with a series of other charges related to the scandal that involved the DAS in a massive smear campaign against human rights defenders, politicians, journalists, judges and others.

"Noguera’s conviction is a crucial step on the path towards justice in Colombia. We now want to see all those responsible for the crimes committed by the DAS, whoever they may be, to be brought to justice as swifly as possible," said  Susan Lee, Amnesty International’s Director for the Americas.
